Easter Island Tours
Here’s a mid-Pacific mystery, an enchanting and enigmatic Polynesian island far from everywhere, also known as Rapa Nui, the name given to its people. Everything about this incredible place is open to conjecture and historical interpretation. Standing silently at different points along the coast – but looking inwards, away from the sea – are 887 massive monumental statues known as moai. Why are they there and how were they erected? There are no definitive answers. Historians think they represented an Ancestor Cult, and were watching over the living, with their backs toward the spirit world in the sea. They also think this was later replaced by the Bird Man Cult. There are other questions too. Why did the local population dwindle, the trees disappear, and the island become depopulated? Answers range from the impact of the Polynesian rat, tribal wars that included moai-toppling, or the diseases brought by Europeans after the seventeenth century.
This is a very special place, one of the most isolated in the world. You need to be there to soak up the atmosphere. And while you are pondering this eco tourism mystery you’ll be glad to know there are other exciting things to do such as scuba diving, surfing, trekking and horseback riding.
