Sun Island Tours

Some places have that special feel to them, because they are the birthplaces of someone or something incredibly important. La Isla del Sol – Sun Island – is certainly one of them. This ecotourism destination, a little rocky island in Lake Titicaca, inhabited by a few thousand people at most, with no roads and a few eucalyptus trees, is widely seen as the birthplace of the mighty Inca Empire. There is evidence of human habitation on the island going back 5,000 years. Today, most attention is focused on around 80 Inca ruins dating back roughly to the 15th century, including the Sacred Rock and the Chicana, Kasa Pata, and Pilco Kaima ruins.

The Incas believed that both the Sun and the Moon gods were born in the lake. The first Inca, Manco Cápac, son of the Sun God Inti, is believed to have emerged from the lake to the Sacred Rock as did Mama Huaca. You will be moved by this powerful creation myth! Find out more by taking a look at the Essential Bolivia Tour, which includes the Lake Titicaca and also the Amazon rainforest, La Paz and the Uyuni Salt Flat.
